Individualism and privatism in the theacher culture: a review of the arguments

Abstract

Though any attempt to describe the teaching profession in culturally homogeneous terms may become problematic, individualism appears as a reiterative trait in descriptions both theoretical and empirical works make of teachers.

In times when educational reforms and planned change proposals seem to be nurtures by the mythical discourse arguing for the need to transform schools in collaborative cultures or professional communities for teacher learning, it might be useful to redirect our analysis towards this ubiquitous norm. This paper aims to contribute to this debate by reviewing the various meanings and determinants attached to the phenomenon of teacher individualism.
