Traditional and Emerging Focuses in the building of the Theoretical Framework of Environmental Education for Sustainable Development

Abstract

In this article we present a whole vision of different perspectives and focuses that have been shaping the theoretical discourse of Environmental Education. Our objective is to analyze, on the one hand, elements that still have sense within the systematization of Environmental Education and, on the other hand, those elements which should be finding their own place as far as social and cultural contingencies and current ethics are concerned. On this basis, we redefine Environmental Education discourse as the driving force for change from a dialogical and interdependent perspective among human beings; and the environment as the vital domain for individuals and the rest of living beings. Environmental Education and its processes should pursue the crystallization of perspectives to reach the meaning and the sense of the individual in the whole connection with his/her world of life.
