Identity Formation and Educational Relationship in Difficult Social Situations: Kinship Foster Care

Abstract

Kinship Foster Care is today the most common measure in those situations in which social services consider that a child must be removed from the home of the parents in order to ensure his/her welfare. The purpose of this article is to propose a pedagogical reflection about two fundamental questions of socio-educational actions in this measure of child protection: identity formation and educational relationship.

Continuity that kinship foster care provides to the life story of children constitutes one of its best benefits, because it facilitates identity formation. However, this process implies some obstacles coming from the tragic past that many times motivated the separation between the child and his/her parents. Moreover, the relationship that the educator shouldmaintain with the family during the process of intervention is conditioned by diverse factors such as the coercive context, which have to be taken into account.
